Is Web Presence for Artists Important?

I think having a web presence as an artist in this date and time is very important.  I really is the best “store-front” we have to show out work to anyone interested.  I know there are a lot of artists out there that are intimidated by the idea of doing much on a computer (I know a lot of artists that do not like anything technical!) but it does not have to be scary.

There are many “art website” companies out there that have the template set up specially for artists and all you have to do is plug in the information and images.  The first one I found out about is Artspan.  An artist friend of mine still uses Artspan after many years and still likes it.  A few others that I have friends using are Zhibit and Fine Art America, which you may be limited in what you can do or add to the site, but if you want easy, simple & basic these work.  Also with Fine Art America you can sell prints of your work straight through them.

There are also non-art related ones like Wix, Weebly and even blog sites like WordPress.com and Blogger.  Again, there may be limitations, specially on the free or inexpensive versions, but it gets you on the web.

I feel the fastest & easiest way to get your work out there is Facebook!  You can easily set up a “page” for your art and sharing with the public is very easy.  People do not have to have a Facebook account to be able to view your work on a Facebook Page, they just won’t be able to comment, etc.

Now, lots of artists are afraid of having their work stolen or copied off the web.  My feeling on it is you can keep your work hiding at home and no one will see it, or have as many people see it as possible!  I feel it’s not much safer hanging in the public either with everyone having cell phones, so worrying about it will just keep you from ever showing it.  There are certain things you can do to make it more difficult for anyone to steal your work from the internet.  First, you can post images that are too small for anyone to make a copy or print of.  You can make them under 800 px and 72 dpi.  You should also add a watermark across your image.  I believe some of the art websites have a feature that you can automatically add a watermark to your image.

Of course there are many more sites I did not list here.  You can always hire someone to do a website or set up Facebook for you, you do not have to do it alone.

FYI- My website www.gretaolivas.com is built with WordPress.org, free web software, but you do need to get your own domain name & webhost.

Anyone have good suggestions for websites!  Please post on the comments and hopefully it will help someone!

Blog Post 12.15.12 (I want Peace…)

I am done with giving my energy to all the negative horrible news, bombarding me non-stop.  I have had so many thoughts running through my head, so I thought I would put them down in a post to share.  Some will agree with what I say, some will not.  But I thought I would get this off my chest and move on.

The last year or so I have been on a search.  You could call it a search for myself or a search for inner peace or a search for happiness.  Some will probably say I am in a “dream world”, or I am naive, but if you just allow yourself to open your mind you may see a different point of view.

Peace, we all say we want it.  But how do we exactly achieve it?  I do believe that we will never achieve it with violence (of any kind).  I believe that if we truly cared about others, their happiness, their well-being, we would eventually have peace.  We have to get out of our “what’s in it for me” mentality, well-being for everyone will only make things better for everyone (this includes healthcare, both physical & mental).  I think peace is contagious and it spreads.  Peace cannot be forced on someone.  It has to be shown by example.  ANYTHING negative or violent will NEVER achieve peace.

Guns = negativity = destruction.  There is nothing positive that would ever come from them.  You may try to rationalize it but the bottom line is all they do is destroy, that IS their function.  You can say protecting yourself is positive, but if your mentality is about protection, you are not thinking peace and it’s a negative thought.

People are not born wanting to hurt others.  That is put into people’s minds.  Everyday there is violence and negative energy on the news, on tv shows, on the roads and people’s attitudes.  Have you ever tried to say something nice or help someone that was angry toward you or meant harm? Maybe you should try it and you may be surprised!  I do believe everyone wants to be loved, it’s human nature, and a lot of people have never been given that.

Ok, I have expressed my opinion.  I will now stop commenting, “liking”, re-tweeting posts related to the horrible event from yesterday.  I will stick to my usual positive thoughts.  You may comment or share this post.  I will not comment on positive or negative thoughts, all my thoughts are above.  I will approve comments as long as they are constructive whether positive or negative.

Thank you for listening.

Peace…

Blog Post 1.15.12 (Working my Left-Brain!)

Well, if you are coming across this blog post, my left-brain worked!  I decided to move my blog over from WordPress.com to a WordPress.org hosted site.  There were quite a few details involved, and it will take a bit of tweaking, but the basics are done. (Yay!) I won’t explain all the details, since the few people I tried to do that to told me all they heard was blah, blah, blah, blah… and I figured if you are looking at my art/photo blog you are probably not that interested in the details.

The main reason for my change is that I wanted to be able to have ads eventually and monetize my blog a bit (I have to support my art career somehow! 🙂 ) and I was not allowed to do that on WordPress.com.  Since I am writing more about my painting process I would like to have links to books I like so that they are easy to find and purchase.  And we will see where else this blog adventure takes me.

Stay tuned for links & info to my favorite things I like to use for my art.  I may do a special page, not sure yet.  This is definitely a work in progress.
