Blog Post 12.12.11 (Found great article on Buying Art)

Got my new Origin Magazine this weekend (and yes, I have work in it! Pg 63) and read the article “Trust Your Heart When Buying Art” by Origin Columnist and Owner of Russell Collection Fine Art Gallery- Lisa Russell.   It was wonderful to read, specially as an artist.

We as artists are often insecure about our art, and it was great to read her viewpoint on how people should go about buying art, specially coming from a “big gallery” owner.  If you have a chance, get the magazine, which can be found at Whole Foods Markets Nationwide.  It looks like they will have it online at some point, and If I see it posted I will definitely share it.  (Wish I could share more, but I am sure I should not) :(

Here’s the cover for the December/January issue:

Blog Post 11.5.11 (My Pursuit of an Art Dream…)

Well, some of you might have seen that I just recently got an art studio space.  Since I have been in a small apartment, it’s been difficult to make myself paint.  As us artists know, if you have to take all your supplies out, then put them up when you are done, you will talk yourself out of doing it.  I was painting outside most of the time, which it was either 100+ degrees, or I was being chased inside by bees.

Old "Studio" (balcony)

I had several things happen this summer that made me determined to find a way to get a studio space.  First, I attended an Abstract Painting and Collage workshop with California Artist Robert Burridge.  I kept hearing my friends that had attended his workshops in the past say that he was amazing and they have attended his workshops numerous times.  Well, I saw why!  I was extremely inspired and felt that whatever it takes- I must paint every day!!  (By the way, I highly recommend his workshops, his enthusiasm is contagious, and yes, you WILL want to paint!)

Then I read the book “The Secret”, recommended by my friend & my sister.  A few little things happened that really made me believe in the book, and that what I want I can achieve.  I could not afford to rent a studio space, but I knew I just HAD to find a space.  So I posted a comment on Facebook asking if anyone had or knew of a space I could use.  Well, the Universe sent me a space!  It just happened to be a friend that I met through an “Artist’s Way” book group.  Talk about Serendipity!!! It’s a garage that she needed help fixing up, and so in exchange I use it as a studio!

My New Art Studio

My New Art Studio

I have not gotten into a routine yet.  Several weeks of working on the space, organizing, a bit of painting and celebrating (I threw a big Opening Celebration party), but I think now I am to the point that I can plan on going daily.  It is hard to do when you work full time at a very “non-artistic” job, but I have to make myself do it.  Part of my plan to make myself “accountable” is getting the word out, I feel that if I let everyone know I am an artist and I have a studio, I am now expected to paint!!  So there it is…

I plan to post some of my progress in the studio, my thoughts on being an artist, and a bit of my work on this blog as well, so I hope you will follow my pursuit of my Art Dream! :)

Photo Post 9.25.11 (Wyoming at Night)

I was in Wyoming a couple of weeks ago, with a gorgeous full moon.  The view was breathtaking, and there was no way I could capture it in a photo, but I tried.  Also my attempt at a star trail shot (not a very good one!)

Here’s a few of my night shots.

Painting Post 9.4.11 (New Abstracts- Done?)

Here are a few of my latest abstract paintings.  Not sure if they are done, so I thought I would post them and get some feedback.  I have been trying to paint everyday, since I attended Robert Burridge’s workshop last week, and he said I MUST paint every day!  (Yes, he’s right! And I highly recommend his workshop!!)  It’s hard, working full-time, then coming home without a good studio space to paint in, but I am trying my hardest to do at least a little bit every day.  I am trying to play, and discover myself and my style in painting.  I know I have to do a lot of it before I find it!!

Photo Post 8.30.11 (Cactus Blossoms)

I was out in the Texas Hill Country last week at an Art Workshop.  I came across this cactus with these beautiful blossoms!  They just jumped out!  I took this with my phone camera.  I decided not to take my Canon, because I wanted to concentrate on painting, and not photographing!  (But I could not help myself with this one!).

Photo Post 7.27.11 (Cow Parade Austin)

I got to check out the amazing cows done by some local Austin artists for Cow Parade Austin.  CowParade Austin is proud to partner with the City of Austin and the Children’s Medical Center Foundation to benefit Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas and Superhero Kids Fund.  You can go see them right now at the Long Center (not sure how long they will be there).  I got to photograph almost all the cows, but I realized I missed one of my friends cows!  I have them all posted on my Facebook page (and will add my friends cow when I get the photo! :) )

Here’s a few of them!

Photo Post 6.10.11 (ROT Biker Rally 2011)

The Republic of Texas Biker Rally (ROT Rally), is always a great photo opportunity.  So much going on and quite entertaining.  And YES, it’s loud!  I took quite a few shots, and these were my favorites.  I did just use my 50mm 1:4 lens, I thought I would see what I would come up with, and I knew it was going to get dark.  (The first shot here is my favorite!  It’s a bit blurry but I love it!)

Photo Post 6.3.11 (Lightning Storm)

I realized a couple of days ago that I forgot to take a look at my lightning photos from a few weeks ago.  I was quite disappointed in most of them, but I guess it’s all about the learning process.  This I think is the best one out of the bunch.  My problem with most of them was that they were out of focus! (Grrr) Oh well, I will work at it next time.

Photo Post 5.30.11 (Extreme Apertures)

Today I had the urge to play with my camera.  I thought I would take photos at both extremes of the apertures!  I like the different effects you get from both ends.  Love the star burst shape from the f/22, and the bokeh from the f/1.4.  Here’s what I got! (And thank you to my hubby for posing for me!!!) :)
